y the early 1970’s, Lafayette Avenue Church was well on its way to being a multiracial, multicultural congregation, a phenomenon not reflected in the stately interior of the sanctuary. A young Pratt Institute artist, Hank Prussing, was commissioned to paint a giant mural around the upper balcony, reflecting the diversity of the community and the church. Prussing went out into the streets and took photographs of the neighborhood people and activity, which he used in painting the massive swirling sea of community life titled, “Mighty Cloud of Witnesses,” a phrase from the letter to the Hebrews. To this day, people come into the church to find their parents’, grandparents’, and children’s images in the great mural.
